The energy performance classification applied to white goods now also applies to buildings. Energy Identity Certificate shows this classification in buildings. It aims to increase energy efficiency and prevent waste and environmental harm.

Why Is It Necessary?

  • Obtaining an Energy Identity Certificate is obligatory under the Energy Efficiency Law No. 5627. Buildings constructed after 2011 cannot get a usage permit without an Energy Identity Certificate. For buildings constructed before 2011, purchasing, selling and renting processes are prohibited without an Energy Identity Certificate, starting from 1 January 2020.
  • The Energy Identity Certificate informs you about savings opportunities by showing you how much energy your building consumes for lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation.
  • The Energy Identity Certificate measures the energy consumption-related greenhouse gas emissions in a reference range from A to G and either confirms that your building is environmentally friendly or shows the areas of improvement.

Who Should Obtain an Energy Identity Certificate?

  • As per the Energy Efficiency Law No. 5627, Energy Identity Certificate is obligatory to get a usage permit for buildings constructed after 2011 (new buildings).
  • For buildings constructed before 2011 (old buildings), Energy Identity Certificate is obligatory for buying, selling and renting processes.
  • Business owners and building managers who want to save money by seeing how much energy is consumed in their building for lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation must get an Energy Identity Certificate.

What type of buildings must get an Energy Identity Certificate?

Energy Identity Certificate is not mandatory for the following: buildings in industrial zones where operation and production processes are carried out, places of worship, buildings with a planned usage period of less than two years, buildings that are used for less than four months in a year, buildings with a total usage area of less than 50m2, greenhouses, agricultural buildings, ateliers, buildings that do not need heating or cooling such as warehouses, ammunition dumps, storehouses, stables and barns, buildings or monuments under protection, buildings of the Turkish Armed Forces and the Ministry of National Defense, as well as the buildings of their affiliated bodies, and the buildings of the Undersecretariat of the National Intelligence Organization. It is mandatory for all other buildings.

How long is it valid for?

It is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. A copy of the Energy Identity Certificate must be put somewhere at the entrance to the building where it can be easily seen

When should it be renewed?

In important modification projects or in mechanical and electrical installation changes/replacements that require project change in buildings: If the total cost of modification for matters affecting energy consumption such as facade, mechanical and electrical installation in the building exceeds 25% of its property tax-based value, the Energy Identity Certificate must be renewed.

For New Buildings (Constructed after 2011)

  • Building license
  • Architectural Project
  • Electrical projects
  • Mechanical installation projects (Heating Projects - Cooling Projects - Ventilation Projects)
  • TS 825 report
  • Static Project
  • Signed and approved solar power plant project if there is a solar power plant in the building
  • There is no need for exploration in the building.

For Old Buildings (Constructed before 2011)

  • Building license
